Why Learning in Digital Contexts?

I am a full time teacher and program coordinator at a community college in Ontario. I am taking this course (Learning in Digital Contexts) for two reasons. The first of course, is for degree completion. I am hoping to graduate this April 2013 with all of my required credits – woohoo!

The second is because the world in which I live and work requires me to be as technologically literate as possible. If I want to be the best teacher and to understand how my students communicate it is imperative that I improve my competence as related to a new media world.

Also, I teach courses including Advertising and Marketing and both of those disciplines are significantly impacted by various social media tools.

All of the challenges that I am undertaking in trying to understand the technology (more the tools and less the content) help me to appreciate the struggles that my students face and I believe that makes me a better teacher. (It also doesn’t hurt to stay abreast of my own kids!)
